今朝は、ちょっと不思議なことが起きました。毎朝あげている1万遍の題目が、いわば「オーバーラン」してしまったんです。1万遍を超えたことに気づかないまま唱え続けて、1万1千遍あたりでようやく「あっ」と我に返りました。思わず笑ってしまいましたが、これはこれで、大切なことを教えていただいた朝でした。

1万遍を超えても、気づかなかった / Passing 10,000 Without Noticing
いつもなら区切りで自然と手が止まるものが、今朝は題目に集中しすぎていたんですね。1万遍を超えたことにまったく気づかず唱え続け、ふと数珠を見たら1万1千遍。それだけ今日の祈りに没入していたということなんだと思います。時間も数も忘れて、ただ祈りそのものの中へ入り込んでいく。あの感覚は、狙って出せるものではありません。
なぜ、オーバーランしたのか / Why It Overran
思い当たることがあります。今の私の祈りが、それだけ真剣だったからなんじゃないか、と。「ここで変わりたい」「人生をゲームチェンジしたいんだ」——その強い一念が、自分でも気づかないうちに私を題目の中へ深く引き込んでいったんですね。逆に言えば、それほど生命力を使う祈りだった。本気で何かを変えようとするとき、人はそれだけの生命力を必要とするのかもしれません。
題目は、生命力を引き出してくれる / Daimoku Draws Out Our Life Force
私たちは普段、自分の中にどれだけの力が眠っているか、なかなか分かりません。でも今朝、題目によってその一端を体験させていただいた気がします。もともと自分の生命の中にある力。それを引き出してくれるのが題目なんですね。66歳から始めた毎日1万遍・3年で1,000万遍の挑戦も、一日一日、自分の生命力と向き合う時間の積み重ねです。数を追うためではなく、内なる力を信じて引き出していく——その大切さを噛みしめた朝でした。

Good morning. This is Yukihiro Shima from Oubaitori.com, Japan’s only specialty store for Soka Gakkai Buddhist altars.
Something curious happened this morning. My daily 10,000 daimoku “overran.” I passed 10,000 without even noticing, kept chanting, and only came back to myself around 11,000. I had to laugh — but it taught me something important.
Passing 10,000 without noticing. Usually I stop naturally at the milestone. This morning I was so absorbed in the chanting that I sailed right past 10,000 and kept going. When I glanced at my prayer beads, I was already at 11,000. That is how deeply immersed I was in today’s prayer — forgetting time and number, entering the prayer itself.
Why it overran. Looking back, I think it is because my prayer today was that serious. “I want to change, right here. I want to change the game of my life.” That strong determination pulled me deep into the daimoku before I realized it. Perhaps it was prayer that drew on a great deal of life force — which is exactly why my whole being sought more.
Daimoku draws out the life force within us. We rarely know how much power sleeps inside us. This morning, daimoku let me experience a glimpse of it. The power already within our own lives — daimoku is what draws it out. My challenge, begun at 66, of 10,000 daimoku a day and 10 million in three years, is really the daily practice of facing that inner life force. Not chasing numbers, but believing in the power within and drawing it out. Today is Saturday, so I will be going live this morning. Let’s open up victory in our lives through faith — together.
