[SGI] I Stand Alone | I Win My Own Life, by My Own Hand | Oubaitori.com

Smiling man in a white shirt raises a clenched fist, with a banner containing pink text overhead and green text at the bottom in the background.

Good morning. Bloom your own way, at your very best. This is Shima, from Oubaitori.com. This morning began, as always, with ten thousand Daimoku. And in the middle of chanting, something came to me. I am not sure I can put it into words. But let me try.

We stand alone — Bodhisattvas of the Earth

We who chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo are Bodhisattvas of the Earth. We do not lean on someone else. Each of us stands alone. With that spirit, we win our own lives, with our own hands. No one wins it for us. We decide to win, and we stand. Faith, at its root, begins here.

The Gohonzon before us is the life the Daishonin awakened to

The Gohonzon before our eyes — the very life that Nichiren Daishonin awakened to — is the life of Buddhahood. It is the mutual possession of the Ten Worlds itself. It is not some distant, serene, finished ideal. It is our own life, whole. And because our life holds all Ten Worlds, of course we are shaken. Of course we are thrown by the four and eight sufferings. We live inside a torrent of feeling.

Not swept away — I chant right in the torrent

Here is the point. Do not be swept away by the feeling. But do not sit still and wait it out either. Right in the middle of the torrent — chant. Chant Daimoku. Change your karma. Do your human revolution. In that determination, in that practice, pull up your own solid Buddhahood — summon it, right there. The one who moves it, the one who builds it, is no one but you. Not waiting to be prayed for. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, all the way through, by your own will. That, I think, is the key to changing a life.

But this is not something you grasp with your head. You feel it with your life. I can say all of this, and still, unless you feel it yourself, the words may not reach you. I decide, I pray, I act — and so I can feel it. I am still on the way. I want to keep doing my human revolution, until one day I can say this plainly. Let’s Daimoku. Together, today.
