Good morning. Bloom your own way, at your very best. This is Yukihiro Shima, from Oubaitori.com. This morning, again, ten thousand Daimoku. And so the day begins. Outside, it is already hot. Even indoors, the heat presses in — the kind of morning where you feel you could go down from it. On a morning like this, there is something I want to think through, together with you.

Today is not a continuation of yesterday

When the heat drags on, the mind drags with it. “Yesterday was hard. Today, the same again.” But today is today. It starts clean. Yesterday’s tiredness, yesterday’s grumbling — cut them, once, right here. Begin this one day, new. Just deciding that much changes how the same heat meets you. A person can change in a year. Whether you truly taste that change inside yourself — it starts from this small resolve. To begin today, new.

First, notice the complaint rising in me

Honestly — I slip into complaining all the time. “It’s too hot. I can’t take this.” Those words. That way of feeling. Before I know it, all of it has turned into grumbling. What matters is to cut it, somewhere. To switch the very sense of my own life, quietly. And for that, first I have to notice: “Ah — right now, I am complaining.” The moment I notice, the feeling settles. A calm mind returns. That calm, I believe, is my most natural, finest state. That is where the day starts.

Same heat — what makes the difference?

These days, everywhere, forty degrees has become ordinary. The heat is the same for everyone. The body cries out the same way. And still — some are swallowed by it, and some move through the day quietly, step by step. Same place. Same life. And yet, different. Where does that come from? I see it as a difference in the one determination of the heart. The weather, I cannot change. But the self that meets it — that, within Daimoku, I can always set right. Here, I feel, is the real power of faith.

Do not make today a sequel to yesterday. Notice the complaint, and come back to a calm mind. Even in the same heat, begin the day from there. Let’s Daimoku. Let us make it a day where you bloom your own way, at your very best. Thank you, today as well.
