The Joy of Overcoming, One by One — A Grandfather’s Piano Challenge (Morning Daimoku #1,131)

Good morning. This is Yukihiro Shima — Bloom your own way, at your very best.
I overslept a little today, but I still finished the 10,000 Daimoku. This morning marks Morning Daimoku #1,131.

Yesterday was full — a live broadcast, two rounds of workshops, and news of a new website coming next week.
Every advance brings new obstacles. But we can overcome them, one by one. That is when I feel most alive.

The Joy of Overcoming, One by One

Effort. Challenge. Overcoming. When these three keep stacking up, that is when life feels truly alive.

In one day yesterday — the live, the workshops, the news about the new site — each step brought a new difficulty. And for each one, we sat down, chanted Daimoku as the root, and took it apart, one at a time.
Where there is difficulty, there is joy in overcoming it. That is the heart of this faith, felt anew each morning at the altar.

Our Summer Grandkids’ Camp Begins Today

And today, our annual summer grandkids’ camp begins.
For the next week or so, our home will be filled with voices, laughter, and running feet. It is the happiest week of the year at Oubaitori.

This week, I want to show them my back — the back of a “Super Grandpa”.
The morning Daimoku. The daily challenges. The love for family. Not by telling them, but by living it in front of them. That is how faith is passed to the descendants who will live 1,000 years from now.

Playing “Haha” (Mother) in Full — Without Reading the Score

That is why I started the piano.
Tonight, I will play the song “Haha” (Mother) in full for my grandchildren. The goal: play it through, without looking at the score. I cannot wait to see their faces.

Piano, at 69.
Once told it was impossible. Now, sitting at the keys. If my grandchildren can see that “Jiiji wants to be a Super Grandpa who keeps taking on something new, at any age” — there is no greater proof of this faith than that.

If the timing is right, I will share the moment on video.
Let’s Daimoku! Let’s enjoy today.
