“Is there a Buddhist altar made without chemicals?” One phone call led to this story. For someone living with chemical sensitivity, we set out to build a made-to-order altar from natural wood alone — the Kokū Zushi. This is from our YouTube Live #150, Part 2.

A Phone Call from Someone with Chemical Sensitivity

Over the years, their reactions had grown stronger. House dust. The adhesive in wallpaper. Things most people never notice, the body responds to.

And the question was about a Buddhist altar — the very place where one sits before the Gohonzon to chant. If a reaction can arise at that most sacred point, then this was something we had to answer.

Why Ordinary Altars Contain Chemicals

Most altars sold today are “furniture-style” altars. Their core is often engineered wood — wood broken down and bound with adhesive. A printed sheet is glued over it, and a coating is applied on top. From the material up, chemicals are layered again and again.

Perhaps you have heard of someone reacting the moment they step into a brand-new room. The reason is the same. For a person with chemical sensitivity, each of those layers can be felt.

So is there an altar made without them? The honest answer was simple. “It does not exist — unless you make it.” Build with solid wood. Add only what is necessary: metal hinges for the doors, non-volatile LED lighting. Follow that through, and you return to the origin — the way chairs and shelves were once made from wood alone.

Made to Order — One Altar for You Alone

The Kokū Zushi is, at its heart, a made-to-order altar. “Kokū” refers to the design of the space itself that receives the Gohonzon. Because it is custom-made, we can let you choose from natural woods, and build to a specification that avoids chemicals as far as possible — one single altar, for you alone.

The very next day, the head of our partner traditional-craft workshop happened to be visiting. They spoke directly. The wood was chosen. The estimate came together. Everyone’s constitution is different — so we begin the conversation at the level of materials, and decide together. That is how we work.

For more than forty years I was, in truth, just a dealer. A man who sold Soka Gakkai altars, yet could not chant daimoku from the heart. By chanting on and on, my life slowly began to change, and I became a maker — one who seeks the altar from which daimoku rises. Three years, ten million daimoku. Now toward twenty million, and one hundred million. I do not set my own limit. Writing in English is part of that same single path.
