On a quiet Sunday, just after a typhoon had passed, I recorded this video. Today, I would like to share with fellow members around the world the true story of why I created the Buddhist altar known as the Kokū Zushi.
実は私、お題目が苦手だったんです / I Was Bad at Chanting
こんなことを言うと驚かれるかもしれません。長年、創価学会仏壇の専門店をやってきた私自身が、ずっとお題目が苦手だったんです。「島さんは毎日たくさん題目を上げているんでしょう」と思われがちなのですが、正直に申し上げれば、上げたり上げなかったり。継続して唱え抜くという経験を、私はずっとできずにいました。年齢を重ね、まだまだ諦めたくないと努力するなかで、行き着いたのは「もう題目を上げるしかない」という一点。それなのに、その題目が上がらない。これが私の根本的な問題だったんです。

This may surprise you. Although I ran a Soka Gakkai altar store for many years, I myself had always struggled with chanting daimoku. People assume, “Mr. Shima must chant a great deal every day” — but honestly, I chanted on and off. I had never truly experienced chanting consistently, day after day. As I grew older and refused to give up on myself, I arrived at a single point: there was nothing left but to chant. And yet the daimoku would not come. That was my most fundamental problem.
「題目が上がる仏壇」を求めて——虚空厨子の誕生 / The Birth of the Kokū Zushi
私は仏壇をたくさん売ってきました。自宅にも仏壇があります。でもその前で、私自身の題目が上がってこなかった。だったらなぜ、メーカーは「題目を上げたくなる仏壇」を作らないのか。担当者にも社長にも何度も聞きましたが、答えは「わからない」。作る側自身が題目を上げていなければ、想像できるはずがないんです。それなら私自身が考えるしかない。そうして辿り着いたのが、御本尊にしたためられた虚空会の儀式でした。それは文字ではなく「場面」——三次元であり四次元でもある壮大な空間です。それを空間としてデザインし、御本尊を御安置する。虚空会の儀式をステージ化したものこそ、「虚空厨子」なんです。池田先生のご指導を数多く拝しながら、「これだ」と思える形を求めていきました。

I had sold countless altars, and I have one in my own home — yet before it, my own daimoku would not rise. So why, I wondered, do altar makers not create an altar that makes you want to chant? I asked manufacturers and their presidents again and again, but the answer was always, “We don’t know.” Of course — if the makers themselves do not chant, they cannot imagine such an altar. So I had to find the answer myself. What I arrived at was the Ceremony in the Air inscribed in the Gohonzon. It is not text but a scene — a vast space that is three-dimensional, even four-dimensional. I designed that space and enshrined the Gohonzon within it. The Kokū Zushi is the Ceremony in the Air given form as a stage. Studying President Ikeda’s guidance deeply, I sought the shape that made me say, “This is it.”
変毒為薬——人間革命と仏壇革命の物語 / Turning Poison into Medicine
実際に虚空厨子の前で唱えてみたら、題目が上がったんです。人は追い詰められた時、人生のターニングポイントに立った時にこそ、深く物事を考えられる。生老病死——老いも病も死も必ず訪れます。だからこそ残された時間を真剣に生きたい。私は3年で1,000万遍の誓願に挑み、「本当に題目は上がるのか」を自分の身で証明し、毎日YouTubeに記録しています。さらにこの実証を世界の同志へ届けたいと願い、日本語版を英語版『Let’s Daimoku!』にしました。出版の過程ではトラブルもありましたが、それさえも変毒為薬の智慧として受け取っています。毒を薬に変える——それは宿命転換であり、人間革命そのもの。「仏壇革命」と銘打ったこの物語は、私自身の人間革命と、仏壇そのものの革命、二重の革命の記録なんです。

When I finally chanted before the Kokū Zushi, the daimoku rose. It is when we are cornered, when we stand at life’s turning points, that we can think most deeply. Birth, aging, sickness, death — all come without fail, so I wish to live my remaining time in earnest. I took a vow to chant ten million daimoku over three years, proving with my own life whether the daimoku would truly rise, and I record it on YouTube every day. Wishing to bring this proof to fellow members worldwide, I turned the Japanese book into the English Let’s Daimoku! There was trouble during publication — but I receive even that as the wisdom of turning poison into medicine. To change poison into medicine is to transform karma, and that is human revolution itself. This story, named “Butsudan Revolution,” is a record of a double revolution: my own human revolution, and the revolution of the Buddhist altar.
