Good morning, and I hope you’re well. This is Yukihiro Shima at Oubaitori.com. I finished my 10,000 daimoku again this morning. Lately, seeing old classmates and neighbors grow older, a question came to me: where does aging really come from? Today is July 7th — Tanabata, the Star Festival here in Japan.

「老いはどこから来るのか」 / Where does aging come from?
歳を重ねること自体は、誰にも等しく訪れます。でも「若々しい人」と「老けて見える人」の差は、どこから生まれるのか。同じ年齢のはずなのに、その違いはどこにあるのか。唱題を続けながら、そんなことを考えていました。
Aging comes to everyone equally. Yet some people stay youthful while others seem to grow old — even at the very same age. Where does that difference come from? That’s what I kept turning over in my mind while chanting.
答えは「ともかく行動する」だった / The answer: keep taking action
お題目を続けてきて思うのは、ともかく行動すること。「やってみようかな」と思ったら、もう動く。トライ・アンド・エラーです。失敗しても、それを糧にまた前へ。行動を続けていると「暇」が自動的になくなり、一日一日の時間が大切に思えてくる。そうして日々を過ごすと、ふと気づくんです。「老いている暇なんて、ないじゃないか」と。
What I’ve learned from years of chanting is simple: just keep taking action. The moment you think “maybe I’ll try,” move. Trial and error. Even if you fail, let it become fuel and step forward again. Keep acting, and idle time quietly disappears; each day starts to feel precious. And then it hits you — there’s simply no time to grow old.
七夕の朝に、祈ること / A prayer on Tanabata morning
今日は7月7日、七夕。孫が竹に折り紙を結んで、玄関の前に飾ってくれました。七夕は毎年なかなか晴れませんが、織姫と彦星がめでたく再会できますようにと祈ります。そして——大切なあなたとも、またお会いしたい。その願いも込めて、今日もお題目を。
On Tanabata, two star-crossed lovers are said to reunite just once a year across the Milky Way. The sky here rarely clears on this day, yet I pray they meet again — and I pray that I may meet you again, too. May we all keep acting, keep chanting, and leave no time to grow old. Let’s chant daimoku together today.
