おはようございます。桜梅桃李.comの島幸弘です。朝の題目1万遍、今日も元気に始まりました。昨夜から今朝にかけて起きた”事件”を通して、「題目をあげる人生は、転んでもただでは起きない」とあらためて実感しました。
英語版に、まさかの”黒い四角” / A Garbled English Proof
昨夜、英語版『Let’s Daimoku!』の見本サンプルが届きました。ところがページをめくると、虚空厨子について書いたパートがまるごと黒い四角——文字化けで埋まっていたんです。よりによって、いちばん伝えたかった場面がです。
販売休止、そして題目のなかで / Pausing Sales, and Then Chanting
不良品をお客様にお届けするわけにはいきません。慌てて販売を休止しました。がっくり来ましたが、今朝は窓を開け、朝の空気を吸い込みながら題目をあげました。唱題のなかで、ざわついていた心が静かに定まっていったんです。
“ただでは起きない”——対訳版へ / Turning It into a Bilingual Edition
題目をあげながら、二つのことに気づきました。まず原稿を直すこと。そして、65ページと少し薄かったこの本を、どうせ直すなら日本語の原文と英語版を併せた”対訳版”にしてしまおう、と。トラブルが、そのまま”よりよい一冊”への入り口に変わった瞬間でした。仏法でいう「変毒為薬」——毒を変じて薬と為す、です。レッツ題目、ただでは起きませんね。

Good morning. This is Yukihiro Shima of Oubaitori.com. My morning Daimoku — 10,000 chants — has begun again today. Something happened last night that reminded me, once more, that for those who chant, even a stumble is never wasted.
A garbled proof copy. Last night the proof sample of the English edition of Let’s Daimoku! arrived. But as I turned the pages, the entire section about the Kokuzushi altar was filled with black squares — corrupted, unreadable text. Of all places, it was the very part I most wanted readers to see.
Pausing sales, then chanting. I could never let a defective book reach a customer, so I quickly paused the sales. My heart sank. Yet this morning I opened the window, breathed in the morning air, and chanted Daimoku — and within that chanting, my restless heart grew calm and clear.
A bilingual edition is born. As I chanted, two thoughts came to me: first, simply fix the manuscript; and second, since the book was rather thin at about 65 pages, why not turn this revision into a true bilingual edition — my original Japanese text alongside the English? A setback became the doorway to a better book. In Buddhism we call this hendoku-iyaku: changing poison into medicine. With Daimoku, nothing is ever wasted.
